Help
A walkthrough of everything MyKitchenDex can do.
➕Adding Recipes
There are three ways to add a recipe from the My Recipes home page:
Parse from a URL
Paste any recipe URL into the top input and click Parse Recipe. MyKitchenDex will fetch the page and extract the title, ingredients, steps, and timing automatically. Most major recipe sites work. If a site blocks automated access, use one of the manual methods below.
Paste recipe text
Expand the "Can't paste a URL?" panel and click the Text tab. Copy and paste the full recipe text — ingredients, steps, everything — into the box. Optionally add a source URL, a title override, or a description. Click Parse Pasted Text.
Paste or drop recipe photos
Expand the "Can't paste a URL?" panel and click the Images tab. You can:
- Press ⌘V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows/Linux) to paste a copied image
- Drag and drop image files onto the drop zone
- Click the drop zone to open a file picker
You can add up to 8 images (5 MB each). The AI will OCR all visible text across the photos and extract the recipe. Images are not saved — they are discarded after parsing.
Editing a recipe
Open any recipe and click Edit (top right). You can update the title, description, estimated time, ingredients, directions, and notes. Ingredients support named sections — prefix a line with ## to start a new section (e.g. ## For the Sauce).
📷Recipe Photos
You can attach a single photo to any recipe you can see — useful for a finished-dish photo or a handwritten card.
- Open the recipe detail page.
- Click Add Photo (or Replace Photo if one already exists).
- Select a JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP image (max 5 MB).
- A crop tool will open — drag to reposition and pinch/scroll to zoom. The photo is always saved as a square.
- Click Save Photo. The image is reviewed automatically before being stored; explicit or inappropriate content will be rejected.
- To remove the photo, click the Delete Photo button beneath it.
Photos are visible to all members of your group. Anyone who can see a recipe can also upload or replace its photo.
🏷Tags
Adding tags to a recipe
On any recipe detail page, use the Add tag dropdown to apply existing tags or type a new tag name and click Add. Click the × on a tag badge to remove it.
Managing your tags
Go to Profile & Security → Tags to rename or delete tags. Default tags (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, Snack) are created automatically when you first save a recipe.
Preset tag pages
Pin up to 5 tags as preset pages — they appear as quick-access links in the My Recipes dropdown in the navigation bar. To pin a tag, go to Profile → Tags and click the pin icon. Drag to reorder them.
🔍Search & Filter
Keyword search
Use the search bar on the My Recipes page or the Search link in the nav. Results are ranked by relevance across title, description, ingredients, steps, and tags.
Filter and Sort
Click Filter and Sort on the My Recipes page to filter by tag, owner (in shared groups), or keyword, and to sort alphabetically or by date. Active filters appear as removable badges above the recipe grid.
📅Dinner List
The Dinner List is a lightweight weekly meal planner.
- Click the 📅 button on any recipe card or detail page to add it to the list.
- Access the list via the Dinner List nav link or the slide-out panel (the tab on the left edge of the screen).
- On the Dinner List page, assign recipes to days of the week and generate a consolidated shopping list with one click.
- Remove items individually, or clear the whole list at once.
👥Groups & Sharing
Groups let you see and browse recipes from other users in your household or cooking group.
- Go to Groups in the navigation to create a group or join one with an invite code.
- Once in a group, you can see all other members' recipes on the My Recipes page. Use the Owner filter to narrow by user.
- You can add tags or upload photos to any recipe you can see, but only the recipe owner can edit or delete it.
- Leaving a group removes access to other members' recipes immediately.
⚙️Profile & Security
Changing your password or username
Go to Profile & Security from the account dropdown in the top-right corner. You can change your username, email address, and password there.
Two-factor authentication (2FA)
Enable 2FA under Profile & Security → Two-Factor Authentication. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, etc.) and enter the 6-digit code to confirm. Once enabled, you will be prompted for a code on every login.
Deleting your account
Account deletion is handled by an administrator. Contact your MyKitchenDex admin to request account removal. All your recipes and data will be permanently deleted.
